ChesterGates Veterinary Specialists offer an Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) service. This service is led by ECC Specialist Dr Simon Hagley BVSc DACVECC.
The ECC service provides patients with emergency and critical care including the longer term management of compromised patients. Dr Hagley is also able to provide advice to clinicians who may need help in emergency situations.
The department works closely with the other Specialist disciplines within the hospital to help receive all same-day emergency and critical care referrals. Transfer of these cases to the appropriate department can then take place following any emergent diagnostics or treatment interventions.
Specialist training in this field allows the rapid and targeted treatment of life-threatening conditions, stabilisation of a patient and initial investigation of a wide range of conditions. Such training incorporates a comprehensive understanding of fluid therapy, shock, sepsis, acid-base, coagulation and many acute diseases.
The ECC service can also provide a point of contact for concerned owners or a primary practice veterinary surgeon requiring urgent referral to a discipline for which an appointment may not be available.
In addition to primary case management, the referral ECC service aims to provide supervision and guidance for the emergency out of hours veterinary team, MiNightVet.
Typical emergency cases for the ECC service include patients presenting in shock or with unstable perfusion parameters, patients in respiratory distress, patients with electrolyte derangements, diabetic ketoacidosis, acute kidney injury, liver failure, patients exposed to toxins, patients requiring blood transfusions and many more!
