Intervertebral Disc Disease
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is the most common cause of spinal cord injury/paralysis in dogs; certain breeds are predisposed to intervertebral disc disease (e.g. Dachshunds, French Bulldogs etc.)
Overview
Intervertebral discs allow movement, provide support for the entire vertebral column and act like “shock absorbers” between vertebrae. Over time, intervertebral discs undergo degenerative changes (primarily influenced by genetic factors), which transform the biochemical composition of the inner part of the disc (nucleus pulposus) into fibrocartilaginous material. This transformation alters the biomechanics of the disc, predisposing it to develop IVDD.
IVDD is not a single condition but a group of diseases that affect the spinal discs and the spinal cord. It can lead to pain, alteration in the gait and in severe cases inability to move the limbs or even worse to feel the pain perception. There are several types of IVDD, each with a unique characteristic, treatment and outcome.
Advanced imaging techniques like MRI (gold standard) or CT scan help to identify the specific type of intervertebral disc disease, determine the extension of the spinal cord damage and plan the effective treatment, from medical to surgical treatment tailored to the pet’s specific condition.
At ChesterGates, we have a 1.5 Tesla MRI which allows for high-resolution and faster scans.
By investing in proper diagnosis, we are not treating just the symptoms, but we are giving your pet a chance for a better and pain-free life.
We also work with the Dachshund Breed Council on a screening programme to try and reduce the prevalence of disc problems in the Dachshund.
