Neurology Team Perform Brain Surgery to Remove Brain Tumour
6th August 2024
Our neurology team were recently called upon to perform intricate brain surgery for a lovely 7 year old poodle called Lola.
Lola was referred to us from a local veterinary practice because she was having seizures. After investigations, including an MRI, Lola was found to have a brain tumour called meningioma. Meningiomas of the brain in dogs and cats are an operable tumour, and resection can carry a good long term prognosis. Surgery relieves the compression the tumour is causing on the brain, thus reducing seizure frequency.
Lola’s owners opted for brain surgery and this was performed by our neurosurgery team, led by Rocio Orlandi. The tumour was resected completely and a titanium mesh was placed in Lola’s skull to close the skull and strengthen it. Subsequently, Lola was referred elsewhere for radiotherapy and her prognosis good with a median survival time of 1-2 years post treatment. Lola also benefitted from the expertise of our specialist anaesthesia service, together with our skilled nursing team and 24 hour on-site veterinary care.
Lola continues to do well, despite some radiation side effects that are relatively mild.
